Pelicans’ Star Zion Williamson’s Amazing Numbers
Zion Williamson was the first overall pick for the Pelicans in the 2018 draft, and he knocked fans out with his amazing dunks during the Summer League. All eyes were on him to see what the future holds for the former Duke player, and expectations were sky high over what he could do for the team. He was receiving LeBron levels of hype, and in a short time struck a Jordan shoe deal.
With all of that hype, there was plenty of heartbreak when Williamson injured his knee before he even got to play a single game in the regular season. He was out of commission for a few months, and soon after he was finally able to play a professional game, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. At this point, though, he has been able to prove himself between the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons, and he recently signed a five-year rookie extension for $193 million guaranteed with the Pelicans. Let’s take a look at some of the numbers in his remarkable early career.
Williamson Has A 45-Inch Vertical Leap
Williamson has been well known for his dunking abilities ever since he was in high school as his videos have gone viral. He can leap a spectacular 45 inches vertically, breaking the record when he was at Duke, though that has since been beaten with the 46.5 inch leap by Cassius Stanley.
With Williamson’s amazing leaps and exceptionally tall body, he is an unstoppable dunker. Part of it is his innate physical gifts, and part of it is his tireless work ethic, but it all adds up to one of the most impressive dunkers the NBA has seen.
Williamson Has A Height Is 6’7”, Weight Of 285 Pounds, And Wingspan Of 6’10
Size definitely matters in professional basketball, and Zion Williamson has the gift of height. At six feet, seven inches, he is a towering presence, which combined with his jump not only makes him a great dunker but also great at getting alley-oops and blocks.
Many felt that his 285 pound bulk was excessive, and various analysts made a point of it in a mocking manner. His training is likely to get him to slim down, though, and in his rehab process he is sure to shape up. Of course, he will always be a large guy, and while his six feet, ten inch wingspan is not that unusual for his position, it is still a plus for him.
Williamson Scored 20+ Points In Seven Of His First Ten Games
One of Williamson’s most impressive stats is how much he has scored so early in his career. In the first ten games of his professional career, he scored at least 20 points in seven of them. That puts him in the club of just Grant Hill and Shaquille O’Neal to pull that off in the past thirty seasons. On 8 of 11 shooting from the field, he managed 22 points in his first game, with four three pointers.
He blew everyone away later on when he had a streak of 13 games in a row where he scored at least 20 points. This was a record breaking feat, never before done by a teenager, with the previous best being just nine games, which Carmelo Anthony accomplished in 2003-2004.
